Two Scituate residents who formed a conservation trust two years ago are looking to raise $1.3 million to purchase 76 acres off Clapp Road.

The land runs down the northeast side of Bates Lane in Scituate’s West End, considered a pristine part of town.

Residents Cynde and Wayne Robbins, the trustees of the Maxwell Conservation Trust, have been working to preserve the land for the past year. The trust is purchasing it from current owners Charles and Margaret Moncy.

Cynde Robbins said that the trust planned on keeping the land as open space.

“The beauty of this property is that it abuts conservation land and, in fact, will double the amount of protected space in that part of town.” she said.

She added that in the future, once the land was purchased, the trust might want to consider incorporating some nature trails into the land since it was connected to conservation commission land.

Commission Chairman Alan Mayberry Greenberg said the Robbins had been in contact with the board about the trust’s plans to conserve the parcel of land, and said he supported preserving it. The land “certainly has a wildlife habitat,” he said.

The Maxwell Conservation Trust has already purchased eight acres on Clapp Road and is currently trying to save one of the last remaining ocean-side parcels on Third Cliff.

Cynde Robbins said the trust would attempt to raise money “through traditional means,” such as fund-raisers and tapping private donors.
